History & Restoration of the Village

Shannon Harbour was once a hive of activity as boats transported goods from Dublin down to the midlands on a daily basis. The boats were horse drawn and rope markings are evident in the wall of Local Barthe bridge under Griffith Bridge opposite the Harbour Masters House. The Grand Canal now serves a different purpose, it is home to many private boats and barges. One of the highlights in the village is the annual Boating Rally which has been taking place for over 40 years. The village also plays host to many fishermen who fish the canal and the nearby River Shannon and River Brosna which provides excellent course fishing facilities. Shannon Harbour and the neighboring Shannon callow are also a bird watching delight. The callow is a part of a special conservation area and one of the last places in Ireland where the corncrake can be heard. Local farmers work with Bird Watch Ireland to save the corncrake. The Shannon Callow's which flood in the winter have a great wealth of plants and animals – a bird watchers paradise. Notice boards have been erected outlining walk and cycle paths in the area.

The regeneration of the village is now complete. Listed buildings such as the Grand Hotel, the RIC barracks and stores have been made safe. Recent development included two new buildings, a community center and toilet, shower block and full laundry facilities. The creation of wheel chair friendly paths by the canal a picnic area & seating, lighting, parking and play ground have proved a great attraction to locals and visitors alike.
