The Restoration of the House
In 1999, the Harbour Masters House underwent major restoration and refurbishment. In the year 2000, it opened as a Bed and Breakfast, accommodating people from all over the world.
The Harbour Masters House built in 1806, is a listed building of historical importance and the restoration had to be overseen by conservation architects. The roof had to be totally replaced using old slates which were taken from a castle ruins near by. The sash windows were all replaced; some floors and doors were also replaced. The house was totally re-plumbed and re-wired and all the rooms were made en-suite. The walled garden was designed by the head gardener of Birr Castle and it has now matured into a very tranquil setting.
